Track 03 · The Album
Every Day After That
"Two friends got into a truck one night, and we never went back."
Lyrics
Verse 1
Heard he got a new pickup
Black instead of red
Texted him: bring it by my place
"I wanna see it," that's what I said
I didn't know what I was askin'
Or maybe I just couldn't say
Two years of bein' just his friend
And somethin' felt different that day
Pre-Chorus
We went for a little drive
Wasn't headed anywhere at all
Just talkin', headlights on the road
And I felt the ground shift like a fall
Chorus
And every day after that
Every day after that
Two friends got into a truck one night
And we never went back
Headlights on the back roads
County miles and the radio
Two friends got into a truck one night
Every day after that
Verse 2
He took me on the long way home
Down the road then back around
Two hours of just talkin'
And the whole world quieted down
He dropped me off near midnight
I was barely out the door
And I knew before he drove away
I'd be back here wantin' more
Pre-Chorus
We went for another drive
And another after that
What we were turned into what we are
And we never did look back
Chorus
And every day after that
Every day after that
Two friends got into a truck one night
And we never went back
Headlights on the back roads
County miles and the radio
Two friends got into a truck one night
Every day after that
Bridge
My hand was on the console
I wasn't makin' the first move
But I left it close to his
'Til he had nothin' to prove
He finally reached and took it
And I held on like I meant it
I wasn't gonna lead the way
But I sure was gonna land it
Two weeks in I asked him
What he was tellin' folks now
He just said "we're together"
And that was all the askin' I needed somehow
Final Chorus
And every day after that
Every day after that
Two friends got into a truck one night
And we never went back
Headlights on the back roads
County miles and the radio
Two friends got into a truck one night
Every day after that
Yeah every day after that
Outro
Black truck, country road
Long way home with nowhere to go
Every day after that
Every day after that
The Story Behind the Song
The night the line got crossed.
For a long time Kayle drove a little red Mazda pickup. He still has it. But at some point he came home with a black pickup, something bigger and more reliable for the longer drives. Mallory heard about it and texted him: "Bring it by. I want to see it."
That night she got in the passenger seat for the first time. They had been friends for going on two years. They had hung out around fires by the river, fished with their mutual friends, talked across rolled down windows in parking lots. They had never been alone. They went on a drive. They talked. He took her home. And there wasn't a single day after that one where they didn't see each other.
About two weeks in, she asked him what he was telling people when they asked. "Tell them we're together," he said. That was the closest they ever came to defining the relationship. They had been circling each other for so long that, once it tipped, neither one of them needed to be convinced.
"Every Day After That" is the pivot song, in her voice. The slow burn moment when the friendship turned and never turned back.
